Personal taste is your best guide, but the more formal the base, the richer the shade material should be. For bases made of brass or porcelain, for example, silk, fine linen, satin, and velvet are all good choices.

Lampshade Tip 14 - Cleaning a shade E-mail
Worth to Know - Lampshade Tips
If your shade get to dirty to brush clean you can wash it by spraying it with a mixture of woollit and water then rinse under the shower quickly with gentle spray. Carefully blot the shade with a hand towel until it is almost dry. Then put it back on the lamp and turn on the light so the heat from the bulb will help it to finish drying.  Or a blow dryer on warm works well.
